My Dad was Mr HT Ramsden and head master at Minden Barracks school - I also attended there both in infant and junior and then of course went on to board in Singapore. I remember the little Naffi hut near the main building and had some lovely sausage sandwiches with Dad at times. Does anyone remember the threat of snakes in the playing field and that we couldn't play there ? So my maiden name was Fay Ramsden and if interested I have a few photos of that time.

Hi Fay I've just joined the forum. I joined the St. John's school site on face book as my older sisters went there. They are Norma and Judy brewer (their maiden names ) they were boarders there. I went to minden barracks in 1966 then again in about 69-71 my dad was in the RAF. It's so good to share good times. I remember snakes in the playground. I now live in Scotland .

Hi Fay and Jenn,
Lovely to hear from some former school members of Minden Barracks Army School. I was an Aussie boy (live in Melbourne) who went to the school (by truck) in 1957 which is probably before both of you attended. Fay it would be lovely if you could share those photo's you have particularly as I am very interested in that whole era. My brother and I used to roam around the valleys near the camp perimeter and pull Bananas off the stands and check out the rubber tree sap. We did not see any snakes but expect they were there for sure. When we first came we lived in Fort Auchry in the north and had a terrifying encounter with a King Cobra on the way to the beach. The headman of the village saves us and the snake. I have posted my snaps and story from 1956/7 through Cynthia (our moderator) under Robert Hildebrandt in the Photographs section. For info my email address is robert.hildebrandt11@gmail.com and would love to hear from you. Very best regards Robert

Hi Fay only just found this sight. Your dad taught me in 1963 and he instilled in me a lifelong love of learning. I have many happy memories of my short time at Minden Barracks before I also went boarding in Singapore. I will try and look out some photos and post on the site! My brother, who was two years younger than me, also attended the school his name is John Ferguson.

Hi Fay, I was fortunate for your dad to have taught me at Minden from1962/64, he helped me pass the eleven plus. A short anecdote, your dad used to read to us from a book last hour every Friday, at the time of the story, he was reading The Water Babies to us, at one passage he got quite animated and cut the air with his hand to our amazement and I must say amusement his dentures flew out poor man, you can imagine the out burst from a class full of ten/eleven year olds. They were good times and we were so privileged, I remember well going to the pool every afternoon and to the picture house on Saturdays. We lived off the camp being RAF my dad being a sergeant coxswain in the 1125 Marine Craft Unit at Bukit Gelugor. In 1964 I was boarded at Bourne in KL. I heard on the grapevine that your dad went onto teach at some school in Hong Kong. Is that true?

Hi all So nice to stumble across this site, desperately seeking a name I might recognise ,as yet none , but enjoying other recollections. Dad was in the RAF , and I would have attended the school sometime between 67 and 70 . There's a pic posted of class J2 1968 somewhere (not sure how to find now !) that maybe some have seen . I'm back row 2nd from left . I seem to remember our teachers name was Miss Barr . Dad has that picture, along with my sisters form picture , and I'm sure some others that maybe of interest to other members . Lesley Sharp ,my sister is a couple of years younger ,and her teacher was Mrs Grindrod , her husband also taught . Jenn....I remember seeing a snake at the bottom of the playing field once. Dad a keen golfer used to practice there , and I had the privilege of picking his balls up , on one occasion came uncomfortably close to a snake (a cobra ) Nothing but good memories of that school. Miss Barr was a stickler for times tables ! The first 20 mins of class were devoted to them . I remember the school teams were Baden Powell (red), Douglas Bader (green), Nightingale (blue) ,and Cook (yellow) What a life... Swimming virtually every day, Nasi-goreing round the pool , the ferrys to the mainland spotting the fish Eagles , the monsoons with the light show storms, the chit chats and other beasts , the smells of Georgetown , the Chinese card hustlers in the street, monkeys , crocodiles, turtles, ..... It was a sensory paradise for a boy of 8 or 9 and I'm so lucky to have enjoyed it .
