Hi all, I was a pupil at Minden Barracks school from 1963 ish til June 1965 together with my older brother and younger sister. My father was a Captain/Major in the RASC based at the barracks. We returned to the UK in June 1965 and as a 6 year old I have limited memories of Penang. We lived in the colonial style houses overlooking the sea and the road leading up to the Barracks initially at No 6 and then No 4 I believe. I'm calling into Penang on a Cunard cruise in April 2018 for one day and wondered if anybody knows if the houses are still there and if so what the address would be. I'm aware that the barracks is now part of the university but it would be nice to see my childhood home. Any information would be most welcome and I can also pass it on to my siblings. Thanks Phil

Hi Phil, Welcome to the Minden crew. We are starting get older now. I was there in 1956/7 and attended the British Army school for the first year it opened on the grounds of the Barracks in 1957. My father was actually based at Butterworth but we lived in the Barracks and he commuted each day on the ferry across to the mainland. I too was 6 when we were there. Now if you are on facebook there is a great site which is called "Nostalgic Peninsula Malaysia" which has a terrific bunch of historic picture on Malaya and Penang which will be of interest to guys like us. In addition I have been in touch with some of the locals who post on the site with similar questions as yours and it seems that you can access the University grounds thru the security gateway which is probably in a similar place as it was back in the day. The security team there will probably need a photo ID and a quick explanation but I don't thin that will be a problem. So it seems that many of the old buildings are still there and have been re-purposed for the campus. The NAAFI and old Post Office are still there and I take it that the bungalows and houses have been converted into student accommodation. There have been many pictures posted by old Minden's on various websites showing some of the old buildings. Best Robert
