My mother, sister and I lived in Minden Barracks for about 9 months in 1950. My sister Jacky was 6 and I (Lesley) was 8 years old. We lived in #4 Married Quarters and both Jacky and I would have attended the school. My father Hugh Martin was the RSM 45 Commando Royal Marines, based at Tapah. I have no memory of the school, though some vague memories of the barracks. School in the morning, swimming every afternoon. Was there a band tent near the swimming pool? I remember we had an Amah, though do not remember her name. I would love to correspond with anyone who lived in the barracks at this time.

I know this is a long shot but I was born at the Monden Barracks in May of 1965, I was adopted 10 days later by a couple from Singapore and lived there for the next 11 years. I am looking for my birth parents and was wondering if anyone would have any idea how I might go about finding out that info? Thanks for any directions you might be able to give.

I first went to the BACS in 1955 when it was situated in Northam Road and left in 1957 after the school was relocated to Minden Barracks. I lived in Greenlane and my maiden name was Allsop. At Minden Barracks my teacher was Mr Kent. I was lucky that I was "local" which meant that my grandmother and lots of other relatives all lived in Penang, unlike the other students who came mainly from the UK and then from Australia. Among my friends were Rosaline Woods, who also lived in Greenlane, and Victoria Ramsay, who was Australian. I used to help some of the students with their reading and played netball. We used to have swimming lessons at the swimming pool in Minden Barracks. When the Australian children were due to join our school while they were having their own school built, we were given lessons on Australia and we all had to learn "Waltzing Matilda" so that we could sing it to welcome them to our school. Does anyone else remember the tree that we all used to climb on during break periods? Most of us had our own spots on the tree where we used to meet to chat with our friends.

I went to school in Minden Bks, for a short period in the early 1960,s then went to Kinloss House boarding School, Singapore. Father in 2nd RGJ lived in Jalan Bunga Kacha Piring. Loved my time there and hope to go back one day. I have one sister and two brothers. Who all have very fond memories of our time there. Sister seemed to be drawn to snakes as always spotting them at school and they were usually cobras! Never saw one myself. Our Amah was a wonderful lady and Mother kept in touch with her for many years. Our lady who used to make our clothes cannot remember her name..kept in touch with mother and many years later met her son/daughter at the hospital mother worked in ..in the uk!..Always fun going to the bks for family events and usually in the back of a lorry... no health and saftety issues then! lol. Great times.

Dear Beverley Very interesting that we were at Minden during the same period. I started out at Fort Auchery in the north and moved to Minden Barracks in 1957 probably around the time the school changed. I guess we were at the school together but did not know it. I left Malaya in October 1957. Cynthia has done a wonderful job regenerating our website and she has posted a number of photo's from that period plus my recollections on there. She does a great job and I am very grateful to her for kepping our memories alive even though she came from the RAAF side initially. I wonder if you have any photo's of that period as they would be of great interest. Regards Robert

Hi, Robert - Mr Bartos (? spelling) was the headmaster when I was there. We do have photos from that period but unfortunately my parents have them stored away in the UK. I have many fond memories of the BACS and some not so fond, especially having to do needlework because girls were not allowed to take woodwork in those days. I still remember the weeks of suffering while trying to make a red and white gingham check apron. I don't know what happened to it but I have never liked needlework since! We were taken to and from school in army 3-tonners originally but had buses later on.

Dear Beverley, Hope you are well. Thanks for reminding me of the 3 tonners. I recollect going to school and being hoisted up into the back of the truck over the swinging rear flap. I found that more fun than the bus. Hope you can get access to those pics you have in the UK as they would be a wonderful addition to the site. Merry Xmas Robert

Nice post Nick. Welcome to the site. Pity we missed each other by just a couple of years. I went to Minden school when it was on the barracks with Beverley Harden 1956 to Oct 57. If you have any pics, Cynthia would be really pleased to add them to the site. She is also looking for shots of Butterworth. Take a quick look at the photo's on the album section as they really take you back. Regards Robert

We were at Minden Barracks from about 1960 to 1962. My dad, Ron Blake, was in 410 Independent Plant Troop based at Butterworth. My brother and I attended the school in the barracks. I still have school photographs and my reports.

I attended the school in Northam Road first and then we shifted to Minden Barracks when it was new. I remember lots of the teachers, Miss Edna Marsh, Mr David Nicholson, Miss M.R. Mair and Miss Hall. Miss Hall took us for needlework and I still have the red and white check 'shoe bag' that we had to make and embroider with cross-stitch. The two headmasters who were at the BAC School in my time (I was there from 1958-1961) were Mr P W Belson and Mr Richardson. Mr Richardson's wife was also a teacher to the school. I still have my old school reports as well as several photos I took on my Agfa 'Click" camera that I got for Christmas in 1960.

Hi Carolanne, I was at the school from 1956-7 so we just missed each other. Your photo's and reports would be a great addition to the site so I hope you can get them to Cynthia who is really encouraged by new posts such as yours and more material for our great website. All my family photos from the period are up on the website. Regards Robert Hildebrandt

I have just found this site and on viewing it realise that I was at Minden Barracks and the BACS at same time as Robert Hildebrandt. I travelled from Sydney on same Constellation, lived very close and came home on the New Australia at same time. Will dig out some photos.
